Suspension Questions

  • Routine maintenance of your bike’s suspension will ensure it remains performing optimally and prolongs the product’s lifespan. Not only does this translate to a better/safer ride on the trail, it can also prevent costly repairs or replacements.

  • It is recommended you track your ride time throughout the year (approximating is good enough, but definitely keep track of averages) and follow your specific suspension manufacturer’s guidelines on service intervals.

At Traction Works, we adhere to two main service intervals. The 50-hour service, and the 125-hour service. Make sure you get your suspension serviced around these time intervals.

    General rule of thumb…

50-Hour: Quarterly to bi-annually if you ride 1-2 times a week.

125-Hour: Annually, or bi-annually if you’re really getting after it and ride often

Please note: if you spend a lot of time shuttling, riding bike parks, or shredding on an e-bike, you’re bound to hit these intervals a lot faster.

  • It is highly recommended that your fork, shock, and dropper post receive services at these intervals (or at least on an annual basis) to ensure they’re functioning properly and at it’s best potential. Not only is this for the safety of the rider, but the longevity of the suspension, and ensuring it’s performing properly. Trust us, the feeling of fresh suspension is SO nice.

  • In most instances, yes! It’s better to keep them as a pair to better track service intervals and keep suspension feeling consistant

  • EVERY RIDE: Clean exterior with mild soap and water, then wipe dry with a soft towel. Inspect for damage and test control functionality.

ROUTINELY: Check sag and make sure settings are correct. Ensure damper is functioning properly by testing extremes (fully open, fully closed)

  • Not sure if your suspension needs service? You can always bring your bike by our shop for us to take a look! Below are a few signs that could indicate your suspension is due, or overdue for service:

    - If the fork or shock begins to feel harsh and loses small bump sensitivity, this indicates an increase of friction and a loss of lubrication or degraded oils.

    - If adjusting rebound or compression settings don’t seem to affect anything.

    - If suspension creates a slurping noise, this may indicate there is air in your damper

    - If the fork or shock is losing large amounts of oil or air pressure, this could indicate a damaged seal.

    - If you can’t recall the last time your suspension was serviced and has seen quite some ride time. Or has been resting for a long time. It’s probably time to have your suspension serviced. Consult with our techs.
